An attractive resume should have these 5 tools for Cloud Engineer role
Your resume will be rejected immediately if these 5 tools/skills not present, for a Platform Engineer role
Suitable for Cloud Engineer / Infrastructure Engineer
I have applied for many jobs and got rejected immediately because I lack experience in these tools. So I learned some of them to gain attention. In those skills, these five skill/tools are the most important.
Ofcourse it is a no brainer to have knowledge about any one of the major cloud providers.
#5: Python / Typescript
Especially for this role it is wise to have a knowledge of either Python or TypeScript. I don’t include Java because it is not used by most of the companies. Python is a standard language for this role and Typescript is gaining popularity recently. Knowing either one of these languages will elevate your profile.
#4: Github Actions / GitLab / AzureDevOps / Circle CI / Jenkins / Argo CD
Knowing any one of these tools will be a good addition to your profile. It is not absolutely mandatory to know all of these tools, but having a knowledge at one of these tools is necessary as these tools are used widely across many companies and they don’t prefer a candidate who doesn’t know one of these.
#3: Kubernetes
Most of the companies are using Kubernetes to manage their cluster. If you lack knowledge in this tool, it is wise to do a certification on this. Knowing this one tool will put you at least 20% ahead among your competitors.
#2: Terraform
Hashicorp’s Terraform got the second position in this list. Most of the companies are now moving to Terraform, because of its simplicity and support for the major cloud providers (AWS / GCP / Azure).
Does it has a steep learning curve ?
Well, it is fairly simple if you know AWS cloudformation (which was my starting point). If not, it is still simple to learn with your own cloud account.
#1: Infrastructure As Code
This is the main skill you should master if you are applying for this role. It is really simple to learn, yet this takes the first position in this list. If you resume doesn’t include this skill, then you will be rejected immediately.
